This past Wednesday was the official start of the sale season here in Paris. Apparently it’s actually illegal to mark things down before the official start of the sales. There are ads everywhere and while I’ve seen claws come out in North American department stores, the French not only have claws, but strategies…

This ‘event’ (if you can call it one,) had me both curious and afraid. Legitimate reactions considering. But instead of braving the masses, I offered to help the boyfriend out by running and errand for him at Marché Saint Pierre.

Ten minutes later I was surrounded by patterns, threads and so many colors. My mind was firing in all directions but I was mainly ruminating over this tidbit about the boyfriend that I hadn’t been privy to until now…

Yes, the boyfriend knows how to sew. He knows how to trace patterns, and create garments, bags, you name it… No matter I’m only finding this out now. He’s going to teach me! Take that angry crowds, and ‘low’ prices. I’m going to do it myself.

Unveiled

“This is an epiphany I had… I realized that everybody in the end comes down to a uniform. In the end…there is a uniform that works for you. And that uniform can be modified, and it can be changed, and it can be dressed up, dressed down, explored, taken more street, taken more couture, but in the end, it’s an editing process. And as you become more certain of your own vision, and your own taste and your own style, as you evolve, as a person, not just as a woman, you do end up in a uniform. Mine is a legging — it used to be a jean when I was younger — but a legging and a t-shirt. A different t-shirt, a boy’s tank, but nonetheless, there’s a uniform. ” - Vera Wang

I quite litteraly (and willingly) stayed cooped up inside the...

I quite litteraly (and willingly) stayed cooped up inside the whole first day back from my holidays in Austria. Coming home to a bustling city like Paris after having spent two weeks in the Austrian country side as well as a nearly deserted-by-day Vienna can be a bit jarring. Especially following some pretty amazing holidays, save for an unfortunate snowboarding accident that warranted an albeit fun but nonetheless bumpy ride down the Austrian mountainside in one of those blow up sleds and an ambulance trip.

So many people to fit into so few subway cars… Yes you read right. Where I might normally include some form of bicycle reference I now include one about Paris’ great public transportation system. No biking for 3 weeks. #sadface …

In the meantime I’ll revel in the memory of a staring stand off I had a few days ago with some deer (and one raindeer! legit!)

On the record

“Now, with fast fashion, the value of creation is diminishing, and very expensive things are not interesting…I always think that I’d like to do something about the situation…it’s a very profound motivation…but I don’t think it’s something that can really be changed. I’m not powerful enough. There’s a closed-mindedness that prevents movement and change. I always think that I’d like to break that, and I’ve used it [this closed-mindedness] as a theme for collections, but I just can’t seem to break it.

It won’t stop snowing here in Paris.

So festive when the large fluffy clumps start to fall, and so fun to be the first to leave tire treads in it, but wait ten minutes and you’ll be caught in a death trap on any one of the city’s roads, (so not conducive to stopping when on a bike…)

Yesterday, I put up a tree with one of the only people I know who can match my <strike>obsession</strike> enthuisasm with this season. We’re both heading out of the city for Christmas so we figured we’d do a little local celebrating with some hot rum tottys and horrible remixes of the Christmas classics. I blame it on Love Actually. Mariah’s All I Want for Christmas will always be my number one.

I completely destroyed these pants last week when I rode home in what Paris likes to call a snow storm (aka thick, gloppy snow flakes, lots of slush and freezing rain…)

My best camel coloured trousers have now been relegated to a new pile I’ve started that I like to call “things destroyed by my bike.”

My Vans are sure to join them soon. I have a bit of a love affair with my sneakers though. As long as there are a few threads holding the canvas to the soles, they’ll be on my feet.

My purple, light as a feather fixed gear (yea… I have one of those. But not in a pretentious way. I have a break!) has made clothing more like gear than anything else, especially these winter days.

One thing I’m still trying to work out is the how/why (ok, the why is obvious…) it’s so easy for the boys to pull of not looking like underdressed dipittydos while I, girl rider, spend my time straddling the line between hobo and tom boy.

This, rather than Anything-At-All.

“The aesthetics of digital media flow from a related generality, where sound and image are encoded as fields of data. If a pixel is a number, an image is a grid of pixels, video a stream of images, and each of these numbers can take any value at all, then formally, an aesthetics of digital video is only a matter of finding the right values - fishing around in a space containing all possible digital video. If digital media creates this generalised space, anything at all, the media arts are faced with unavoidable questions: not only what to make - which values to choose, but how to choose them, and why?” - Hordaland Kunstsenter

"We are very alike…"

“We are very alike…”

-
Sacha Walckhoff on bloggers

It occured to me that the petit bateau/marinière/naval themed long sleeved shirt has become, like purple and the canary yellow hue that followed it a few seasons ago, the fashion that won’t die.

I don’t think that I’ve seen a pattern achieve such status in my lifetime. A pattern becoming a neutral… It really does pair with just about anything.

Herringbone was popular during the eighties wasn’t it? I can’t help but automatically associate that pattern with posh ladies from Beverly Hills who wear too much red lipstick. I have no idea if that’s a legitimate reference. I was only five when 1990 hit.

I’m not complaining. I’ll easily admit that I own at least two other variations of the style to the one featured on the left. I suppose I just figured coral would be around for a little while longer in the form of apparel instead of being relegated to the tips of fingers everywhere.

Again, no complaints. The red/orange hue reminds me of the Little Mermaid by way of Ariel’s bright hair. It always bothered me that she tried to brush it with a fork. Everyone else laughed while I sat there, annoyed. Thank god for Sebastian or the colour would have lost all of its credibility.

Where the Garment Gapes

“Is not the most erotic portion of a body where the garment gapes? In perversion (which is the realm of textual pleasure) there are no “erogenous zones” (a foolish expression, besides); it is intermittence, as psychoanalysis has so rightly stated, which is erotic: the intermittence of skin flashing between two articles of clothing (trousers and sweater), between two edges (the open-necked shirt, the glove and the sleeve); it is this flash itself which seduces, or rather: the staging of an appearance-as-disappearance.

The pleasure of the text is not the pleasure of the corporeal striptease or of narrative suspense. In these cases, there is no tear, no edges: a gradual unveiling: the entire excitation takes refuge in the hope of seeing the sexual organ (schoolboy’s dream) or in knowing the end of the story (novelistic satisfaction). Paradoxically (since it is mass consumed), this is a far more intellectual pleasure than the other: an Oedipal pleasure (to denude, to know, to learn the origin and the end), if it is true that every narrative (every unveiling of the truth) is a staging of the (absent, hidden or hypostatized) father - which would explain the solidarity of narrative forms, of family structures, and of prohibitions of nudity, all collected in our culture in the myth of Noah’s sons covering his nakedness.”

- Roland Barthes

Sometimes it takes 6 hours, the deconstruction of a hand mixer...

Sometimes it takes 6 hours, the deconstruction of a hand mixer and the realization that it’s motor will in fact not make an ideal power source for a home made tattoo pen to understand that going back to the source is key and simplicity is often the best answer.

And so the tv controller was popped open and thanks to a double A battery, a red wire and a blue wire, one home made tatoo parlor in the heart of Montmartre was given life.

While I mull over whether or not to get a little black heart tattooed on my side, I figured I’d simplify things a little around here too.

Et voila. Yet another redesign.

Don’t be surprised by the disappearance of my older posts. Yes, I went all nuts and deleted it all. Posts were all over the place and didn’t really represent… anything…

Here’s to fresh starts and the hope that my thoughts find a way to logically trickle out of my head and into this space.
